City and Area News
A case of horrible inhuman treatment was reported to the Agent of the Humane Society for which those responsible will have to report to the Court. One cannot believe that a father could take his 5-year old daughter, tie a rope around her body, and then hang her on a nail on the wall and with a club beat this poor little innocent girl. The Agent was very cautious in collecting evidence so that he can prove to the court what the man has done. The man is W. Anton Barnes who has a summer resort in Cedar Lake, near to Elkhart Lake. This is said not to be the first time the father has done this to his child. Earlier it is said that, in the presence of guests, he forced the child to walk around carrying a large card which said “I am a liar.” Another time it is said he made the child walk barefoot to Elkhart Lake. We hope that he will receive the right punishment, if all of these reports are true…. Sheb. Zeitung

W. Anson Barnes, a well-to-do-man who runs the summer resort on an island in Cedar Lake, about one mile north of Elkhart, is under arrest for severely whipping his 5-year-old daughter. This, in his opinion, not being sufficient, he took her upstairs and suspended her by a strap passed under her arms so that the tip of her toes just touched the floor. A short time after she was found by the servant girl who wished to release her, but the little girl begged her not to do so, as her father would kill her if she was taken down without his consent. The servant girl went to Barnes and expostulated with him for his cruelty to the child, but he refused to take her down and kept her hanging for fully three hours. When the girl was taken down, she was almost exhausted, and her hands were blue. The stepmothers of the little girl is known as Fannie Schwedler Barnes, who two years ago organized a class in plysical culture and Del Sarte in Sheboygan. She was indifferent to the punishment the little girl received, and made no effort to prevent it. About two months ago an elder daughter, about fifteen years old, of Barnes, who was also cruelly treated, suddenly disappeared. The story goes that she went to new York City to escape from brutal treatment.
